User-made gamepad for Android smartphones out of Game Boy case and Wii controller

If you own smartphone and you’re a gamer, you know how hard can be to play mobile games on a touchscreen. There are plenty of smartphone Bluetooth gaming controllers available to add a little extra precision to your gaming prowess. But the guy named Chad Boughton created its own unique gamepad out of 1989 Game Boy case and Wii controller guts.
He made it for the Galaxy Nexus, but can easily be altered to any Android cell phone or tablet device. The limitation is really the support of your device with the Wiimote App.
“I wanted to play Nintendo emulators on my phone, but did not like the touch screen input,” said Boughton. “I’ve heard this complaint time and again, all over the ‘net. I’ve seen some great looking commercially produced solutions, but I wanted something more. I wanted to enhance the experience by actually playing on classic Nintendo hardware, and at the same time not having to plug in via USB. Not to mention I love making things.”
He added: “Using a Wii remote as the Bluetooth interface, and a Dot Matrix Gameboy’s butttons and shell (two things I already owned) I figured ‘why not mash them together and give them a whole new purpose?’ With the use of the ‘Wii Controller IME’ App on the Play App store, this retro controller will really control anything which lets you use the Android touch keyboard as input. Although I’ve only tried with a SNES emulator, in theory you should be able to play and do all kinds of things with the Game Boy’s buttons. The project is essentially a gutted Game Boy with a Wii remote inside. The tricky part was rerouting the button connections between the two.”
Boughton has uploaded his user-made gamepad to YouTube for all to see. Watch the video below to learn more about the Game Boy Smartphone Controller project and see it in action.
Some YouTube commenters even suggested he use an NFC sticker to automate the tasks of turning on Bluetooth, enabling the Wii IME app and setting everything else up to get ready to game. It’s not a bad suggestion at all. Unfortunately those of us not skilled enough to pull this off can’t do much more than watch the YouTube video above to see it in action, so go ahead and hit the play button to do just that.
